Schatzie is right - patience and start slow and be gentle - I started Cheri off with a little looser bow so she didn't freak and gradually she let me do anything...It helps to remember TOO tight will hurt and TOO LOOSE will fall or flop around - so a middle area is best when starting them out - Mine both get their hair done EVERY single day - they learned that it's just something we do and actually seem to enjoy it now - but it wasn't like that at first !!

Good luck - another thing I do with Cheri is use tiny scrunchies - they're really easy to practice on....
