Most of my dogs are litterbox trained. I start them out on puppy pads. When they are doing well on those I move them into an empty litterbox. I slowly add litter under the pad so that they can get used to the texture difference. Once they are going well in the litterbox with the litter under the pad I simply remove the pad. For my boys there's a box behind the litterbox that I hang a puppypad on so they have something to aim at when they lift their leg.
