The "CAN"
worked for us! I just had to do that once, and Gizzy settled down and went back to sleep. I try not to overuse "the CAN" because it will lose it's effectiveness. Now, all I have to do is say "No" in a firm voice if he happens to wake up and whine and he settles down.
I find it easier to correct if I catch him before he starts barking. If I can nip it at the whining stage, that works.
But it will be tough for awhile. I feel your pain, and lack of sleep!
PS the "CAN"
is just an empty soda can with a few marbles in it. I shake it and say "No" very firmly.
