Congratulations on your new yorkiepoo!!! I can understand what you're saying. You don't want to support puppymills, but at the same time, this little baby needs a loving home. It's not his fault. But, I would talk to the pet store about a health guarantee, and take the puppy to the vet for a health check immediately after buying him.
As for potty training, we used pee pads to train since it was getting close to winter time. It worked very well for us. It really depends on your schedule and lifestyle and how many hours a day someone is home with the pup.
