Regarding the name change, my mom took my brother's yellow lab when he married his wife since his wife was/is allergic to her, and she changed her name at that point from Gabby to Maggie (yes...they do sound similar, but it was a change nonetheless), and she took to the new name just fine. She was 2.5 years old at the time, and they just stopped calling her Gabby and only referred to her as Maggie, and voila! I don't think it's too late if you really want to switch it. You don't want to be "stuck" with a name for (Godwilling) 15+ years that you don't like!
