I use a heating pad turned on low and only over to one side so there is room for mama to get off it if she get s too hot. Most of the time, after about the first day i don't use it because neither mama or puppies will stay on it and if I need to, I use a heat lamp. I also have NEVER given Nutracal to a whelping mama and certainly not the puppies. Now, I think there are other breeders on here that might give the nutracal to the mama if her labor stops or something like that. not sure why they would give the nutracal. Different breeders do different things. Goood luck on your whelp.
