I've not heard the vaseline trick, so I don't know if it will work or not.
As far as pulling the hair from the ears, you can buy the scissor things that will pull the hair out, but an ear powder should be used. I don't pull mine very often. I only pull it when it looks like it is full of hair, I don't want them getting any kind of ear infection. Some here don't pull the ear hair at all. I think it depends on the dog.
