Heather - start with some scrap fabric and just start sewing. You'll soon find what works and what doesn't and how to size your babies accordingly. It's not too difficult to come up with something you will like and will look fabulous!!!
There are some patterns available out there, but I've always found it is easier to design my own. I have a great website for "D" rings and heavy duty velcro that is much less expensive than the stores and far superior quality too. Let me know if you'd like that info once you get on a roll.
