Our yorkies do the same thing. They are at home 8 hours while we are at work, but I come home for lunch so they get to run a bit. They are very active at night. On weekends, they never sleep during the day so they are very wore out at night. They will lay down and as soon as we move they are up following us where ever. Why don't they stay laying down? I think they are thinking they will miss out on something.
