This is what we had to do once too. The vet would much rather the pups drink from those nipples that are are getting hard, for you to express the milk and placing a warm washrag on the affected aread first- if that doesn't work THEN they will give her a shot to clear up an infection. They don't like to give it first off as the meds will also affect the puppies, but if you can't clear up quickly or if it gets worse/mom gets a fever then you must get the shot. That's MY vets take on it though.
