Are you planning to house-train your pup to go potty outside or on a wee-wee pad?
If you want your pup to go to the bathroom outside then I would not advise you to put newspaper in her crate because then she will think its okay to go to the bathroom where she sleeps.
My pup just turned 12 weeks old yesterday and we got her about a week and a half ago and we use a crate that is about 24 x 21 i think and we put down a towel across the bottom of the entire crate and on the other half we put her little bed and a few toys. At night we cover the crate and during the day we leave it uncovered. We also have a water bottle attached to the side, as my boyfriend and I both work 8 hour days and I can't always make it home to let her out in the afternoon.
We always take her outside immediately after we take her out of her crate, and she usually goes to the potty right away. We also feed her in the cage about 3 times a day because we have two older yorkies and she finds there food more appealing and also gets very distracted at feeding time. We also make sure to watch her ever second that she is out of the cage and if she looks like she has to go potty (circling around we take her outside immediately) or if we catch in the act we say no-no and take her outside.
Also we make sure we always take her outside about 20-30 min. after meals and always before we put her back in her crate.
We've had a few accidents in the house but she seems to be doing well with her crate-training.
I know a lot of people recommend getting a cage that is only big enough for the puppy to stand and turn around but we already had the cage from our previous yorkies and found that it works great.
Hope this was somewhat helpful. |
