Take V's advice and really wear him out before going to bed. Don't let him take naps in the evening when you are home. Play fetch or whatever he likes till you can get him on a schedule.
Also, be firm with him when you put him in the bed (use your stern voice). Absolutely no playing until he has the sleep routine down. (Then you can introduce playing before settling down.)
Two of ours thought it was a great time to play, but the above suggestions worked for us.

Oh... and keep him in the bathroom with you until you are ready to walk out the door. You might try running the TV while you're gone also. It keeps them company.
