I would take him home in a hard pet carrier. I know Lacy was awake but still very groggy when I picked her up from being spayed. I left her in her crate overnight until the next morning when she was fully awake. I did take her out for a couple potty brakes. The first time she was still pretty groggy and threw up just a little bile (the anaesthesia can make them feel a little sick). the second time she was okay but I wanted her to sleep it off good and rest well. No matter how awake he seems when you pick him up, I just think it would be safer and easier on him to be in a secure pet carrier. When Lacy was spayed, I put a newborn onesie on her that I got at Target. It was a little big but it worked. I've recommended it to other that had their little dogs spayed and all said it worked well. I'm not so sure if it would work for a male though since the onsie might rub the incision there... If he messes with them, you may have to get an e-collar (the cone thing).
