I was having this problem with Lillie, is has a long soft coat that would matt terribly! I rub the cowboy magic into her hair and us a slicker brush on her. If I see an area that has a bad matt, I put a drop of CM right on the matt and rub it between my fingers, then brush..I take small sections of hair and brush from the ends in...this helps with pulling. I will usually do this when she is sleepy. I put her on my lap and brush away. It usually takes me about 2 hours to brush her out.
