Newmommy - I am so glad that your mama and her two pups are doing okay.
Whelping a yorkie is much different than your other breeds and a lot more involved. It is not simple. I am so sorry you had such a hard time.
I never leave my female about ready to whelp alone. If I cannot take her to work that week she is due, I make arrangements with my vet and drop her off there on my way to work and then pick her up on my way home. She also sleeps right next to me at night. I also call at lunch time and they have my two numbers plus my husband's numbers too, just in case. P.S. I usually try to take off from work during and near her due date.
I also always assist her in whelping. I think because they are small they get tired so fast and so I do not trust her to do it on her own, especially a mom that is her 1st time whelping. I always do the cutting of cords and rub pups. This was after I had one mom cut the cord way too short and lost a pup from this. I also always have a heating pad or hot water bottle to warm the whelping box (I use an airling kennel bottom to use for whelping area then move pups and mom to their nursery bed after birthing). This way it is nice and warm. I have also found over the years that a warm area (not too warm though) helps to clear the lungs if any mucus still remains. I also check all the time to make sure all pups are nursing well and have a good suction. I have only had to tube feed one litter in all my years and so glad.
I just thought I would place some of the things I have learned about whelping here for others that may read - to help.
I know how hard this experience was for you, but now you can enjoy your babies. Keep us up on their progress.
T.
