I would only hope that they would understand the situation you have been put into and would be the kind of people that would give him back. If it made you feel better, maybe you could come up with some kind of "contract" or something? I wish that you had a way to actually keep him while you're recovering...these guys are the best medicine! I'm prayign that you find a solution to this...it really breaks my heart.
