Lola and Avi would run and do their own thing, regardless of what I asked. Rory and Savi actually stick close, but I haven't gathered the daring to see if they'd follow me on a walk sans a leash. I don't think they'd run off though . . .

I would say training is a very excellent way to teach your dog to obey and understand. Also, personality plays into whether your dog will do as commanded or simply misbehave. (Lord knows they get away with whatever they want) Lola would probably fail miserably at obedience classes, come to think of it.
