Firstly I would deffo do a scan around day 28 to check she IS pregnant. I didn't, after advice, and my bitch wasn't pregnant when I finally scanned her around day 58-60 I think it was !
If she is, I think you will be worried enough that an x-ray will put you mind at rest - hence why I asked for one from my vet in the later stage when I was worried as to her size. I was told a scan would suffice, but I am in Scotland, and maybe an x-ray is more customary elsewhere, and also a better indication of how many pups, any problems with Mum, etc.
