Around my home there's alot of wooded areas and the stray cat population is out of control. There's two local Vets that are trying to help out by spaying and/or neutering any strays that people can bring in.
The reason I'm telling this is because once she's spayed or neutered them she'll actually "tip" their ears so people know they've been spayed. At first I thought this was a bit cruel but with so many cats running around it really is the only way to know which ones have already been spayed.
Perhaps that's what might have happened to her ear?
