I don't recommend using a scissors anywhere near their eyes, mostly bc they can get hurt. But also, when you trim their surrounding eye hair short and "pokey" - it can often poke into their eye and make even more eye gunk and irritation.
Use warm water, a cloth and/or a finger toothbrush (this is what I use).
