Keep them inside. If there are going to be fireworks I normally close all the windows and leave the central air and TV or radio on. They don't really seem to matter.. occasionally we'll hear them at the baseball field and it doesn't phase them.
I've heard that it's best to let them hide if they want and don't do the whole "It's OK" thing.
