Definitely you should know how much experience the breeder has breeding these specific dogs, ask him many specific questions about the breed that not just anybody would know (i.e. specific health conditions).
I started looking for my yorkie at ytca.org. They list reputable breeders there. One woman I was talking to referred me to someone that had puppies available. She emails and calls me nearly eveyday to check up on the baby and give me tips and advice. It was a very easy process and I'm glad I took the time and effort to go through finding my puppy from a responsible breeder. |
I agree that you have to be careful. I got mine from a referral from a local kennel club in Lubbock that is about 2 hours away from me. A friend of mine knew her and she came highly recommended. I also spoke with the vet that she uses about her dogs. What I liked best about her (besides the fact that her warranty not only replaces the puppy but allows you to choose whether or not you will keep or return the first puppy) is that she is very dedicated to her dogs and to her club. She has given me lots of advice and help. She also shows her dogs. I would have gotten one from my family, but they are so far away that I decided to get one here and I was a little nervous, but I'm glad that I did because I'm very happy with the baby that I got.
