Default Seeking photographic advice

Hey, guys. I thought I'd check in with the man thread for advice on another man topic: photography. As some of you know, I'm here in Hawaii on a two week vacation. Well, you know how I like to take pictures. But I'm having a real problem with my zoom telephoto lens. I can't "zoom out." In this first shot, I was trying to take a picture of the surf crashing on the beach, a boat in the background and a brilliant sunset behind. But all I got was this girl swimming. I'm so frustrated!

To make matters worse, last night at the luau, I was trying to get a picture of the band playing, the array of dancers dancing and the magificent stage. Well, as you can see in these shots, I'm pretty disappointed. The first just shows this female dancer's belly button and all the second captured only her coconuts. I'm so embarrassed to be posting them here. My apologies, guys.

So any suggestions, guys, on how to fix my lens? Oh, here's one last shot that my wife got. For some reason, she's not having the same problem with the telephoto. Weird.
