Yes it is normal for them to bleed slightly as the gums would be very soft if the teeth were never brushed. This happens in people who don't brush their teeth and suddenly do.
With time he will get used to it and the gums won't bleed just as yours don't.
Once a day is fine, couple of times a week is fine. Let him play with the tooth brush a bit with you hanging onto it so he doesn't bite it. And it will become a game for him.
