I had both my new cat and Lacy microchipped and they were both awake and all. Sophie (my cat) didn't seem to even really notice. I just remember Lacy letting out a little whine but that was it. Every dog will be different painwise. It's just like getting a shot, but the needle is bigger. I'm sure it hurts a little but it is overwith quickly. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice. Most of the time you can't feel it once it's implanted, but I can feel Lacy's and Sophie's...but it is hard to find. Lacy got an AVID chip and Sophie got a Home Again chip. After I got Sophie's, I also registered Lacy with Home Again. I recommend Home Again because of all the extras they do - like send allerts out to all shelters and vets in your area if your pet gets lost. Plus, Home Again has been advertised like crazy so a lot of people have heard about it.
