I didn't crate train mine but I did use an x-pen and babygates. When we got Spike, Gracie was trained. We broke out the x-pen and babygates for Spike and didn't have any problems. I don't work so I did have Spike out a lot so he and Gracie were able to play but if I was busy or leaving the house he went into the x-pen. He didn't being confined of course but it didn't bother Gracie.
