There can be a lot of factors that cause tear stains. First of all, it can be genetic. Some dogs are genetically prone to tearing more than others. Your vet gave you an antibiotic because when the hair is contantly wet, bacteria can buildup there turning the hair a reddish-brown color. So the antibiotic can help get rid of the bacteria growing there. You also want to feed a food with no dyes in it as the dyes can come out in the tears and saliva and cause stains. Most of your premium foods don't have dyes in them. Minerals in tap water can also cause stains so if you have a dog that really has a problem with staining, you might want to try distilled water. Finally, there are two products that really help control the stains. Angel Eyes is a product you sprinkle on their food and that works from the inside out to prevent stains. Eye Envy cleans the hair on the surface.
