my coco has very thick long silky hair. the underneath gets a little matted. if your little one has thick hair, i would suggest using conditioner. they have doggie conditioner but i use infusiun. it makes it much easier to brush through, get the matts out and very shinny.
but if you have a puppy, the hair might not be very long.
