I don't think annual shots are necessary and the same goes for humans. When humans get vaccines, their body start to develop more T cells and these T cells works better the second time the body comes into contact with a particular disease because it has already been exposed once (via vaccines). The same goes for animals. They can't become more immune to the shots. The only shots that was given to my yorkie are rabies and it lasts 3 years.
