As for your grandson ... this sounds like a condition that 2 of my friend's 4 kids had. It's some kind of genetic thing and both she and her husband are carriers. It hit their daughter (firstborn) and I think their third child.
With their daughter, they were terrified. One doctor told them that they didn't need surgery, just to massage her head. Second and third docs said surgery or potential death. They did the surgery -- and they have a VERY HEALTHY 13-year-old today! With their son, they had already been through this once and everything was fine with him, too. He is 6 or 7 now.
