We did the same thing with Tilly. We would have her stand outside and wait till she pottied. Sometimes we were out there forever! She would do the same thing, pee outside and always poo inside. Never figured it out either. We bought her treats and suprises when she did really good. Eventually she caught on. It did take months though. Hang in there....hopefully he will get back into his old routine.
