When I first got my yorkie, I was home with her for the first two weeks. It helped her feel comfortable and I had time to watch her constantly and let her know what is and isn't acceptable. If you're getting a puppy it would probably be best to let him or her just have a closed off area to be in while you're away where he or she can't get at anything to destroy, other than toys of course! Kong toys are a great way to keep them occupied while you're gone. Now that my yorkie is a year and a half old she does well at home by herself... she pretty much just sleeps all day! Last year when I was still in college, I usually left the tv or radio on for her while I was in classes. It helps for seperation anxiety if they can hear voices so they don't feel so alone! I hope this helps, and congratulations on getting a yorkie!
