This is all mighty helpful..I have the same problem with Daisy sometimes. There are times when she's really excited with someone being at our door and will go nuts and the minute I open the door she'll run out. Thankfully we have two front doors (a mini entrance hallway in between the two doors) so we always catch her and put her back inside the house.
Then there are times when she's in a calm mood and she'll stand by my feet as I go to open the door, I then turn and face her and say ''STAY!", and she usually does.
A little trick I've learned that works is when I turn my whole body to face her, she will stop walking and look at me.
