Here is how I teach "stay".
1. Start on a leash
2. Have the puppy in the heel and sit position on your left side.
3. Put your hand in front of her nose with a flat palm and say "STAY".
4. At first, reward with praise and a treat if she does it for a couple of seconds. Keep increasing the time before giving the treat.
5. Eventually step to face the puppy and give treat if she doesn't move with you but stays in the sit.
6. Take a step back.
7. Keep increasing the steps back and then walk back up and reward the stay with praise and a treat. When you take enough steps to get to the end of the leash you can start to teach "come"!
