Default Has anyone ever made a dog ramp?

For a long time we have just had our box spring and bed on the floor, which has made it easy for Loki and Sammy to get on and off. I made a step out of one of those wood crates from Michaels and covered it with batting & fabric. Sammy uses it, Loki doesn't. Anyway, this weekend we put our bed back up on the frame and now the bed is too high for either of them, even with the step.

I want to make a ramp or steps. It doesn't have to be very wide, but high enough so they can get on the bed without jumping more than 12 inches. The bed is about 30" high.

Everything I see is $100-200. We have a circular saw, jig saw, staple gun, etc. so I think i can make one for much less than that. My question is - do I need to make a plywood frame? Or can I just use foam? I can sew, so covering it will be easy. I'm curious if any of you have ever done this and how to get started.

I'd like to make one that looks like this. I'm not really a fan of the wooden staircase kind. Covered steps would be OK though.

Or - can someone suggest one that does not cost $100? The *cheap* ones really are cheap, and small.

THANKS!
