Give it time, and play around with it, and you'll get better. I am completely self-taught, and I did the same thing several years ago with a machine I bought from "Best" (Dang, I miss that store!).
I'm still learning new stuff everyday. I only recently learned how to use some of the other stitches on my machine, and I've had it for 15 years!
