Yes he needs a new one. I don't like plastic crates. The metal cages are much taller, roomy and you can see your dog easily. I would measure your dog then take a tape measure with you when you go to purchase a new crate/cage. (Mya's cage is 15" wide x 24" long x 21" high. She is 12 inches long nose to tail stretched out and 8 inches top of her head to the floor when standing. If she doubles in size I will double the cage size).
