I had an issue like that when I got my two spayed and neutered. The vet in his 20 years of practice, never gave out e collars, because in his experience, the dogs he treated never licked or scratched them.
I said to myself "oh no.. my dogs would be the exception rather than the rule." And they were. Teddy licked most of his stitches off within a 5 hr period, Theresa was doing the same. I had to take them to the emergency VET to make sure their stitches weren't coming undone.. and have the fitted for the ecollars. I must have the best Emergency VET in the area.. THEY CHARGED ME NOTHING for seeing my dogs, and I didn't even have to pay for the ecollars. I was soooo grateful.
They faxed my information over to my vet, and my vet called the very next day, to tell me, "your dogs are the exception. But I thank you for not over reacting about it. I do have the ecollars, but most pets never have to use them."
So...the moral of the story: GET AN ECOLLAR.. Trust me it will save your grief in the long run (and worry too!)
