There is different level of " sit and stay". I can get a dog to sit and stay within minutes but for short period of time. For those long "sits and stays" you see in obedience trials, it takes months and months of training. With Teddy it took 6 months before I can get him to sit with just a "sit" on command and stay in position without me being in the room for 30 minutes or more. I do use treats a lot and still do but for things he know how to do really well, its all verbal praise with no treat involved.
