I'd try to get him to stop calling your yorkie an 'it' ? that's a good step in the right direction.  Dogs aren't 'it's' especially when the dog is living with you on a day to day basis....oh - and I hope you do take peoples advise...it sounds like the crate time is pretty excessive. I wouldn't normally post like this but he did ask about it and it sounded like he was proud of the 20 hours a DAY your yorkie was in a cage.

Chris calls people "it" and he is not proud of crating Tanner that long. I know that for sure. We both feel bad.
