I'm currently teaching Bella to walk on a leash. I tell her 'heel' and give her a gentle tug (I use a harness, not a collar) and bribe her along with a treat. After a lil bit, I stop, and when she sits, she gets her treat. If she doesn't sit on her own, I 'make' her sit by pulling the treat back over her nose and gently pushing her bottom down. And don't forget lotsa praise.
