You can have the anal glands removed, but it isn't really recommended unless the problem is a cronic one. If a dog/puppy has never had the glands expressed and isn't having any problems, then please don't let anyone express them because then it will be an ongoing thing. My 15 year old Chihuahua has never had hers expressed and neither has Zada 2 1/2 or Azrael 2 yr. 5 months and I don't plan on expressing them unless it becomes necessary. I have always home cooked for my dogs, so maybe that helps.
