If you have a pool I think it is imperative to start them swimming at a young age and getting used to knowing how to get out of the pool if they fall in accidently when no one is there to fish them out. They need to be trained to get to the steps or the beach entry or whatever area your pool has that allows them to get out.

I have a pool and I am petrified because we have 6 exterior doors that lead to it! I have purchased a "skamper ramp" to allow them to get out in more than one area of the pool. My yorkies are small and I am afraid they might tire easily and not be able to swim far enough to get to the steps. I am also having my pool modified to allow a "beach entry" which is a sloped area that allows them to touch and walk up a concrete ramp to get in or out.

Below are photos of the skamper ramp that you can get at skamperramp.com as well as photos of my Hefner in his life jacket which I think is an absolute necessity on a boat.
