My 5 month old pup also does this (also a boy). I think it is normal. Just try to be consistent with him and enforce your rules so that he knows where the boundaries are. And don't pick him up if he is waking you up by crying. Even if you wake up, don't give him his way. This will create problems later on. Hope this helps.
