I just switched to Canidae from Nutro Natural Choice. It's certainly not the only good food out there, but I feel confident it's safe and healthy for them.

I can't think of any good books off the top of my head, but I would recommend a puppy obedience class at your local Petco or obedience school. Anything to get your dog socialized. It's very important that you get your pup used to other dogs and people at a young age.
