We got Reagan at 14 weeks and you could tell her ears had never been trimmed and they were standing straight up. It was probably a good two months at least before we ever trimmed them and we've never had problems with them standing. I guess I've never really had a preference to up or down.
So if you want your down it may take more than not trimming them. Like other have said use tape as well.
