I use a natural flea control in my yard, beneficial nematodes, so I don't have fleas in my yard, and thus, no fleas on my babies. For the occasional flea from a walk outside the yard, we just give them a bath in dawn dishwashing liquid.

We use the same flea control in our yard, and boy is that stuff great!
Here's what it says in my "Home Remedies" book about using garlic for fleas:
"Add garlic and brewer's yeast to your pet's daily diet. Even try rubbing the yeast into your pet's fur. Both ingredients are said to make a flea's taste buds curl in disgust. There's no scientific proof, but some pet owners swear by it."
