Actually, Maxwell can get tangled around anything and everything. It drives my husband crazy. It's pretty funny sometimes. We also have a 50' lead for when we are hanging around outside. The retractable is pretty easy to untangle. Hold the dog, retract the leash, presto. I don't let kids use it with him because they aren't alert enough to know when he needs to be on a short or long leash.
