Default Tooth Descaling

I have just gotten my 2 furbabies and the 4 year old has quite a bit of plaque buildup on her teeth. We've been brushing her teeth every day but it doesn't seem to help. The Vet said she need a tooth cleaning but I am loath to have her put under with an anesthetic. Yesterday, at a Pet Fair, we met a woman who does it all by hand without restraints or anesthetic. Says it takes about an hour to do. So, from the sound of it, it's like when I go to have my teeth cleaned at the Dentist but do you think having her held by a stranger and going through the whole 'scritching' process for an hour will be too traumatic? She lets us brush her teeth now and I really don't want to jeopardize that!

Thanks,

Lin
