I would take your puppy out on a harness and leash. My parents live in the country surrounded by woods with snakes, coyotes, etc. so when I visit I still take Lacy out on a leash. That way if you take him out on a leash, he is close to you and supervised at the same time. And he can't run off and get snake bitten or attacked in the woods. For the ticks I would talk to your vet about K9 Advantix. I've never used it because I've never had a problem with ticks, but it's supposed to keep ticks off your dog as well as fleas and mosquitos.
